Description
Howard Tischler, like many baby boomers, undertook the challenging responsibility of caring for his aging mother during her late-life transition from retirement to assisted living and eventually to long-term care. He made every effort to respect her desire for independence. Mrs. Tischler, a retired accountant and Juilliard-trained pianist, stepped away from her career at 75 due to declining eyesight. Following her retirement, she set up a strict budget that allowed her to manage her expenses and maintain her independence, even as her eyesight forced her to give up driving. She found joy in her music collection and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles. However, concerns about her cognitive abilities arose after a family trip when Howard discovered a startling credit card bill close to $8,000, a shocking amount for someone financially astute living on a fixed income.
